So the most important qualities, I wouldn't narrow it down to one, but I would say it would be compassion, it would be, so I wouldn't narrow it down to one, but some of the important qualities are like compassion, empathy, communication, leadership and teamwork. One that I find the most important maybe would be empathy, so being able to build a doctor-patient relationship, engage with patients and build that trust so that they feel comfortable enough to share anything with the doctor and that would obviously lead to ensuring patient safety, improving patient care and it goes in line with the N...

The student named important qualities before choosing empathy but needed more detail in justification.

qualities are like compassion, empathy, communication, leadership and teamwork

Try saying

Some of the important qualities are compassion, empathy, communication, leadership, and teamwork. Empathy stands out to me because it is essential for building doctor-patient relationships, which builds trust and ensures effective care.

Breadth before commitment: 7 → 8Justified choice: 6 → 7

Framework step: Name several qualities before you commit: Open by acknowledging that many qualities matter and name four or five of them, such as empathy, communication, teamwork, honesty and reflective practice. Do not jump straight to a single answer.

Drill: Practise clearly stating the reason for selecting your chosen quality.

The justification ties back to NHS values, but an example was missing.

improving patient care and it goes in line with the NHS core value of improving lives.

Try saying

This aligns with the NHS core value of improving lives, as demonstrated during my volunteering where empathy helped a patient feel understood and supported.

Evidence from experience: 4 → 6

Framework step: Finish with evidence from experience: Use one specific example from work experience or volunteering that shows the quality in action and why it mattered to the patient in front of you.

Drill: Think of a relevant work experience story where empathy made a difference.

Framework coverage

How your answer maps onto this station's framework, step by step.

Name several qualities before you commit: Open by acknowledging that many qualities matter and name four or five of them, such as empathy, communication, teamwork, honesty and reflective practice. Do not jump straight to a single answer.

Covered

The student named compassion, empathy, communication, leadership, and teamwork before selecting empathy.

Frame them as lifelong development: Say you are actively working on all of these rather than claiming to have mastered them, and that developing them carries on throughout a doctor's career.

Partial

The student did not address the ongoing development aspect explicitly.

Commit to one quality and say it clearly: Pick one, for example compassion, empathy, teamwork, communication or reflective practice, and state plainly that this is the one you would choose.

Covered

The student committed to empathy clearly.

Justify why that one underpins the others: Explain why your chosen quality is the most important. For example, a compassionate doctor will naturally work on their communication, invest in the team and keep their knowledge up to date.

Partial

The student justified their choice but could have expanded on how empathy connects to other qualities.

Finish with evidence from experience: Use one specific example from work experience or volunteering that shows the quality in action and why it mattered to the patient in front of you.

Missed

No specific example from experience was provided.

Avoid the intelligence trap: Do not answer intelligence, knowledge or top grades, and never name a quality without justifying the choice.

Covered

The student avoided referencing intelligence or grades and provided a justification for their choice.

What you did well

  • You effectively named multiple important qualities before choosing one specific quality.
  • Your explanation of why empathy is critical to building doctor-patient relationships was clear and relevant.

Areas for improvement

  • Provide a specific work or volunteering example that demonstrates empathy in action.
  • Clarify how you see these qualities as part of lifelong development.
  • Across all responses: make sure to provide concrete examples to back up your explanations, not just theoretical descriptions.

Model answer & framework

Copied straight from this question's own notes page, so what you see here matches what you'd study before practising it for real. There is rarely one right answer, so use it to compare your reasoning rather than to copy.

How to structure your answer

Open by acknowledging that many qualities matter and name four or five of them. Say you are working on all of them and that this is lifelong development. Then commit to one (empathy, teamwork, communication, reflective practice or compassion) and justify why that one underpins the others. Finish with a work experience or volunteering example showing why it matters in practice.
